Thunder, Thunder, Thunder. . .Cats?

As a youngster, one of my favorite animated cartoon series was ThunderCats. (Okay, ladies, bear with me for a few sentences.) The storyline and characters resonated with me because of the leadership displayed by the leader of the pack, Lion-O. He was literally “the coolest cat,” primarily, because everyone looked to him for leadership, but the fact that he walked with a youthful swagger didn’t hurt.

As the leader of the ThunderCats, Lion-O wielded a sword that contained a jewel called the eye of Thundera. This eye allowed him to see what his fellow ThunderCats could not; they called this process of seeing, “sight beyond sight.” Several of the other team members were older, more skilled, and sometimes wiser than Lion-O. But Lion-O was the leader because he could see and look where the other cats could not.

Interestingly, in Ephesians 1:17, Paul prays a “ThunderCat” prayer for the Ephesus church: “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.” In this prayer, Paul asks for wisdom and revelation for this congregation. Scripture defines wisdom as new knowledge on information that you already know. Scripture defines revelation as the process that causes the curtains of your understanding to draw back so that you can see something that you did not see before.

Through the Sword of the Sprit, the Word of God, you can have sight beyond sight. With this sight you can see “what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9, ESV).
